One of the things we love about our work is that we have access to tons of beautiful papers – but sometimes it can get a little overwhelming. I mean there’s ALL those colors and textures, then add in the finish techniques and the possibilities are endless. Lucky for us we found this little gem of video that employs SIX different print techniques on one sheet: Engraving, Letterpress, Embossing, Foil Stamping, Thermography and Offset – just think we may have to try them all. Produced by Aldine Printing this short is like viewing a slow-mo hi-def press – could just be the best video of the week!

Michael Beirut and the team at Pentagram worked on the concept of a short film highlighting Massimo Vignelli’s building block of design – the grid. The film reveals each successive step as Vignelli’s sketches are transformed into a finished book. Having worked with Vignelli for 10 years, Beirut was familiar with his unique way of designing books, which involves sitting with the all the ingredients — text and images — and drawing each page with a pencil, including all the photographs, using a grid as a layout guide.
Who wouldn’t want to receive a hand written letter these days? Let alone one that’s wrapped in a Moleskine jacket. This little number transforms the written word into a full scale art project with a blank 8 page notebook bound inside a chipboard envelope – all you need to do is fold, address it and put a stamp on it.
We loved the idea so much, we turned it into a DIY project using two of our favorite papers: French Speckletone Kraft 100#C and French
Dur-o-tone Butcher Off-White 80#T, then tweaked the template to make it a Euro flap.
The promotion from New Page on their flagship brand entitled “Shifters,” is all about those people who question the status quo. Aimed at those in the creative and marketing community who go against the grain and create their own path – this piece proves when we shift the way we think about coated paper, we change everything. New Page did that earlier with the launch of Sterling Premium – a paper known for it’s premium quality with a value price
Everything about this new promotion just feels good – from the smaller size of the piece (6.5 x 8.5, it fits perfectly in your hands) to the messaging and the companies profiled. The stark white gatefold cover prominently displays the die-cut title of the piece – with just a hint of match red (NewPage’s PMS color) peeking through. Perfect bound, the pages of the book are tiered out, each featuring bold color choices denoting a new section.
Inside the piece the promotion profiles four companies that have proven to be game changers in their industries, a celebration of American craftsmanship. NewPage shares their stories with the reader not only in print but by actually taking us into the company through the use of augmented reality. NewPage engages LAYAR technology for the app, and demonstrates just how powerful the print medium can be. By uniting print + digital, NewPage clearly highlights the fact that interactive media (AR is responsible for driving almost 10% of all mobile commerce activation), is something savvy marketers and print sales reps should engage with.
