The Handwritten, Digital Thank You Note

I just stumbled upon this app today – the premise is perfect for fans of pen + paper but who tend to be a bit lazy when it comes to the mailing part.  The Felt App takes your hand written message, in your actual hand writing, and puts on the card of your choosing, in your choice of ink color, seals it in a kraft envelope addressed in your script as well.  Now there’s an app that makes the process a little more personalized for the lazy bones out there.

Are You Ready for the Summer?

“Attention…Camp North Star senior staff, counselors, and counselors-in-training, please rise for our national anthem.” That’s the opening line to one of my all time favorite summer movies – Meatballs.  I have to say it still holds up in a fun, kitschy way and makes me long for summers past – when everything was simple, including camp.

I loved summer camp – macrame bracelets, ghost stories, ‘smores – and letters home. Check out these tips and stationery for crafting letters home from the social correspondence experts Crane & Co.

Enve Meets Lope

Young Enve and Lope meet as friends in class, exchanging doodles and notes of affection. The relationship grows through time and is strengthened by a shared love of poetry, music, design, European travel, and, of course, love notes. The culmination of the story – marriage.

This fun promotion from Mohawk highlights eight styles of Mohawk envelopes ranging from square, A2, A6, A7, A9, A10, Monarch and Baronial. Some designs feature windows, others feature unique flaps, and our fave the new Euroflap design.

If you’re not familiar with the paper and envelopes from Mohawk, this is a great piece to start with. “A beautifully designed, high quality envelope will get noticed and will stand out in the mail box, or in a stack of mail on a desk. For a designer or stationer, a well thought out envelope is very much like the elegant wrapping paper on a gift of beautiful design,” said Vincent Giannetti, Director, Envelope Operations, Mohawk. “We hope to encourage more people to begin to think of envelopes as an integral component of design, and as a way to complement and truly elevate their design projects.”

The promotional concept and design was developed by Katie Barcelona, of Room 207 Design, and illustrated by Erik Marinovich, a letterist and designer based in San Francisco.

Lisbon on Paper

This inspiring journal entry makes us want to dig out our passports and hop the pond with our Moleskine’s in hand.

Salty Letterpress

We found this cute little video from Inkwell Letterpress using salt water from the Atlantic mixed with ink for a self promotion “The Official East Coaster.” A new twist on sustainability? Perhaps, we just thought it was quite clever on a Monday morning. Enjoy.

So Many Techniques, So Little Time

One of the things we love about our work is that we have access to tons of beautiful papers – but sometimes it can get a little overwhelming.  I mean there’s ALL those colors and textures, then add in the finish techniques and the possibilities are endless. Lucky for us we found this little gem of video that employs SIX different print techniques on one sheet: Engraving, Letterpress, Embossing, Foil Stamping, Thermography and Offset – just think we may have to try them all. Produced by Aldine Printing this short is like viewing a slow-mo hi-def press – could just be the best video of the week!

Massimo Vignelli & The Grid

“The grid is an integral part of book design. It’s not something that you see. It’s just like underwear: you wear it, but it’s not to be exposed. The grid is the underwear of the book.” – Massimo Vignelli

Michael Beirut and the team at Pentagram worked on the concept of a short film highlighting Massimo Vignelli’s building block of design – the grid.  The film reveals each successive step as Vignelli’s sketches are transformed into a finished book. Having worked with Vignelli for 10 years, Beirut was familiar with his unique way of designing books, which involves sitting with the all the ingredients — text and images — and drawing each page with a pencil, including all the photographs, using a grid as a layout guide.

Moleskine Self-Mailer Turned DIY

moleskine1Who wouldn’t want to receive a hand written letter these days? Let alone one that’s wrapped in a Moleskine jacket. This little number transforms the written word into a full scale art project with a blank 8 page notebook bound inside a chipboard envelope – all you need to do is fold, address it and put a stamp on it.

We loved the idea so much, we turned it into a DIY project using two of our favorite papers: French Speckletone Kraft 100#C and French
Dur-o-tone Butcher Off-White 80#T, then tweaked the template to make it a Euro flap.
